The big question in the gaming industry is what Canada will do about online
internet casinos. The Kahnawake server, one of the servers in Canada that hosts
online casinos, is one of the oldest and most respected servers in the gambling world, hosting about 400 online casinos on tribal land outside of Montreal. The industry is unregulated in Canada at the present time. Most gambling in Canada falls under the jurisdiction of the provinces, not the national government. The provinces benefit from gambling and will lose revenues if they outlaw gambling. The provinces also bear the expense of treatment for problem gamblers. The law regarding online gambling has not been tested in Canada.
The U.S. has recently outlawed the processing of financial transactions between players and gaming companies. They have outlawed internet play. The United Kingdom is regulated its gambling industry with new laws going into effect soon that will allow for more generous
gambling. Players will no longer have to belong to private clubs. The pressure has been on the Canadians to regulate their gaming industry, including the online portion. First Nations has just formed their own watchdog group to oversee compliance with industry standards.
Even though Canadian law has not been tested regarding the legality of the Kahnawake and other gambling servers in Canada, Canada will probably not outlaw gambling. If push comes to shove, they will probably regulate the industry in some way and benefit from increased tax revenues as the British have done.
